How to Prepare a Traditional Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee is a rich, flavorful brew known for its unique preparation method and cultural significance. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to making authentic Turkish coffee at home:
Ingredients:

  • Cold filtered water (about 3 small Turkish coffee cups worth, roughly 1.5 cups per cup)
  • Finely ground Turkish coffee (2 heaping tablespoons per 3 cups of water)
  • Sugar (optional, according to taste)
  • A cezve (traditional small long-handled pot for brewing Turkish coffee)
    Instructions:
  1. Measure the water using a Turkish coffee cup and pour into the cezve.
  2. Add the finely ground Turkish coffee and sugar if desired into the cezve. Gently stir just to combine.
  3. Place the cezve on medium heat and slowly bring the mixture to a boil. This process usually takes about 3-4 minutes.
  4. As the coffee heats, a dark foam will start to form. Just before it boils, carefully scoop some foam into each serving cup.
  5. Continue boiling the coffee until it rises again. Pour half of the coffee into the cups over the foam.
  6. Put the cezve back on heat and let the coffee boil once more for about 15-20 seconds, then pour the remaining coffee into the cups.
  7. Serve immediately with a small glass of water and Turkish delight or a sweet treat if desired.
  8. Let the coffee grounds settle at the bottom of the cup before sipping. Turkish coffee is traditionally enjoyed slowly and savored.
    Tips:
  • Use a copper cezve if available for even heat distribution.
  • Avoid stirring once placed on heat to let the foam develop properly.
  • Turkish coffee is often served without milk and is typically quite strong.
  • You may add spices like cardamom or mastic for additional flavor depending on your preference.
This method preserves the traditional way of making Turkish coffee, celebrated for over 500 years and cherished worldwide for its distinctive preparation and taste.
  1. What type of coffee is used for Turkish coffee?
Turkish coffee uses very finely ground coffee, almost like powder. It is a special grind that results in the thick, strong coffee typical of this style.
  2. What is a cezve?
A cezve is a small, long-handled pot, usually made of copper or brass, used specifically for brewing Turkish coffee on the stove.
  3. Can I add sugar to Turkish coffee?
Yes, sugar is added during the brewing process according to taste. Common options are no sugar (sade), a little sugar (az şekerli), medium sugar (orta şekerli), or sweet (şekerli).
  4. How do I know when the Turkish coffee is ready?
You’ll see a dark foam forming on top and the coffee starts to rise just before boiling. Remove it from heat right before it boils over.
  5. Is Turkish coffee filtered?
No, Turkish coffee is unfiltered, so the fine grounds settle at the bottom of the cup.
  6. Can I use other brewing methods for Turkish coffee?
Traditional Turkish coffee is made with a cezve and stove. Other methods don’t produce the same texture and foam.
  7. How should Turkish coffee be served?
It is usually served in small cups with the foam on top, accompanied by a glass of water and sometimes sweet treats like Turkish delight.
  8. Can I add milk or cream?
Traditional Turkish coffee is served black without milk or cream.
  9. How strong is Turkish coffee?
It’s quite strong due to the fine grind and unfiltered brewing method.
  10. Can I add spices?
Yes, sometimes cardamom or mastic is added for extra aroma and flavor.
